MATH 120: Elementary Statistics: Spring 2022

Announcements

  • Date of announcement: April 18, 2022

Test 2 resubmit rules: As discussed in class today, students may resubmit corrected solutions to questions on Test 2, as a way to earn back some of the points you lost. Before getting into details, here are key items you should know:

    • The due date is Friday, April 22, at the start of class. No grace period or extension is available regardless of reason.

    • The maximum possible grade for a resubmitted question is 70% of its original value, with one exception. If your original grade is above 70%, then you can earn a maximum of 90%.

    • Click here to print out a copy of the test. Submit corrected solutions on this copy, together with your originally graded test.

    More detailed rules:

    1. Resubmit near perfect/flawless solutions.
    2. A 100% correct solution must show all steps, state any assumptions necessary, use English words or phrases to clarify steps or signpost your answers, and show necessary sketches.
    3. Such solutions will earn 70-75% of original maximum points. There will NOT BE any partial credit if a solution is not 100% correct.
    4. ONLY resubmit solutions for problems you want regraded.
    5. Print out a copy of the test and write your solutions on it.
    6. All resubmits MUST attach your originally graded test to it. Otherwise, I will not regrade it.
    7. You may use your textbook, class notes, and class website resources (including supplements, HW and quiz solutions).
    8. You may discuss solution strategies with other classmates and with me. But all resubmits must consist of your own original synthesis of the solution.

Test 2 reminder: Test 2 will be held in class this Wednesday (4/13) at 9 AM. It will focus on material covered after Test 1. This includes OpenStax textbook Chapters 3, 4 (sec. 4.1-4.3), 6, and posted class supplements.

This test will follow the same rules as the previous one, which means: "closed-book," graphing calculator is allowed (but no borrowing from others in class), and no makeup tests will be given except in the case of documented emergency. To help you prepare, we will have a brief review in class on Monday (4/11). Come prepared with questions. Please also be sure to check these practice exercises on probability and related topics, and also check out probability questions on old exams (esp. see Test 2).

Welcome back! As they say, all good things must come to an end - so that other good things (like statistics!) can begin. Hope your break was outstanding, and has refreshed you for the next part of the semester!

Test 1 reminder: This is to remind everyone that Test 1 will be held in class this Wednesday (3/02) in CST 103 at 9 AM. It will cover textbook Chapters 1, 2, 12.1-12.3, and posted class supplements.

This will be a regular "closed-book" test. You will need a calculator on this test. Bring your own -- no borrowing from others in class. Please also note that, in keeping with standard course policy, no makeup tests will be given except in the case of a documented emergency.

We will review test preparation materials and strategies in tomorrow's class. Please come prepared with questions, if you have any, and be sure to work out solutions to the practice exercises posted last week.

Welcome to Elementary Statistics! Our first class will meet at 9 AM, January 31, 2022, in the Center for Science & Technology, room 103.

Statistics is (honestly!) a fun course that should give you a new perspective on the "real" world around you. It is very unlike stereotypical math courses and, in fact, this course could be the start of a wonderful new relationship with mathematics for you! Even if you have always hated math, or seen yourself as unable or uninterested in it, statistics may surprise you -- if you give it a chance (pun intended)! So, I encourage you to approach this course with an open and inquiring mind. As your instructor, my objective is to give you my best and to help you in every way I can -- not only to learn the material and to perform well, but also to find enjoyment in the course! Together let's make this a great semester.
