As part of its mission to support the learning, research, dissemination and preservation activities of the University, the Sheridan Libraries proposes to assist with an evaluation of the policies, and lead the development of the processes, software and systems to support electronic theses and dissertations (ETD). The Libraries already provide submission, dissemination and preservation services for the University’s print theses and dissertations. Many institutions have implemented ETD programs and noted that this has increased discovery and use of graduate students’ research. Additionally, ETDs offer an opportunity to include content such as datasets, simulations, hypertext links, audio, animations, and video. With approval from the Graduate Board, the Sheridan Libraries, in collaboration with academic departments, wishes to conduct a pilot program in ETDs in Fall 2005 and Spring 2006. By working with a diverse set of departments, it will be possible to explore the range of issues including the following: [1] How can such a program support dissemination of and access to students’ theses and dissertations? [2] What types of content, fonts, media, etc. will we need to support for ETDs? [3] What are the training needs for ETDs? [4] What software or systems, including the institutional repository, best support the students’ needs?
JHU faculty who would like to participate in the project should let the libraries know by November 28, 2005.

I recommend the OA tracking project (OATP) as the best way to stay on top of new OA developments. You can read the OATP feed on a blog-like web page or subscribe to it by RSS, email, or Twitter. You can also help build the feed by tagging new developments you encounter.
