The September 30 New York Timesprofiles Eva Harris, an assistant professor of infectious diseases at Berkeley and the "Robin Hood of biotechnology". She starts with expensive, sometimes patented processes, such as synthesizing phosphorous buffered saline or purifying DNA for polymerase chain reaction processing. Then she finds cheap and public-domain ways to get the same results, and shares this knowledge in books and directly with scientists in developing nations. (Thanks to Terry Foreman.)
