Calculus Lab: 4/26/2022

Optimization applications

In this lab we will work through a series of application problems on optimization from Sec. 4.6 in your textbook. The best way to get comfortable with these is through lots of hands on practice. To get started, review this document that outlines a general solution strategy for optimization problems.

Work out complete solutions to these exercises on pages 306-307

          9, 10, 14, 18, 23, 32.

For each of these problems, work through the 2-stage approach given in the above document. This consists of: (i) Build the optimization function (no calculus involved). (ii) Optimize this function using calculus. A complete solution is expected to include a calculus proof showing that you have found the desired type of absolute extremum. Also, make sure your end-results actually answer all the questions that were asked. (However, you may ignore the multiple parts of the step-by-step instructions given in Exercises 9, 10!)

And, for the following 2nd set of problems, I want to only see your work on the setup of the optimization function:

          25, 35, 40.

Your lab report may primarily focus on the solution of each problem. However, please be mindful that I do expect complete and clearly organized solutions, integrated with discussion or interpretation of results, when needed.
