Earlham College Orchestra Recordings

These are the recordings from ECO's 2008-2009 Season.

Fall 2008

On October 30th, 2008 we held a recording session of Beethoven's Symphony No. 1, Opus 21. We invite you to listen to the result.

Symphony No. 1, Adagio Molto/Allegro con brio

Symphony No. 1, Andante cantabile con moto

Symphony No. 1, Menuetto

Symphony No. 1, Adagio/Allegro molto e vivace

This is the concert recording of the first performance of Forrest Tobey's "Keeping Still," with text by Pablo Neruda, translated by Steven Mitchell and used with permission of the translator.

Now I will count to twelve
And we will all keep still.
For once upon this earth
Let's not speak in any language.
Let's stop for a second and not move our arms so much.

It would be an exotic moment,
Without hurry,
Without engines or locomotives.
We would all be together in a sudden strangeness.

Fishermen in the sea would do no harm to the whales,
And the peasant gathering salt would look at his torn hands.
Those who prepare green wars,
Wars of fire, wars of gas,
Victory without survivors
Would put on clean clothing
And walk about with their brothers and sisters
Not doing a thing.

If we were not so single minded
About keeping our lives in motion,
If we could do nothing for once,
Perhaps a great silence
Would interrupt this sadness
Of never knowing ourselves.

Perhaps the earth is teaching us
As when everything seems to be dead in winter
And later proves to be alive.

Now I will count to twelve
And you keep silent
And I will go.
