This tune, sung by Judy Collins, is a perfect example of the major pentatonic. It has been transposed into the key of C (she's singing in Eb).
She is of course making a brilliant statement by singing a whaling song over the acompaniment of the sound of hunback whales.
Notice that, since there is no underlying pulse, the notated rhythm here is just approximate. Her singing style is very free and fluid, as befits the text.

What does she do when she repeats the first verse?

There are a great many African-American spirituals and freedom songs that are in the major Pentatonic. The singability of these songs made them powerful vehicles to unite the people during the struggle for Civil Rights.
Woke up this Morning is a powerful hymn of hope. Notice that in this tune (again transposed to the key of C), it begins on the the low G, but it ends on the tonic of C.

This is another freedom song, this time the minor pentatonic, beginning on A (it's transposed here for purposes of our study).
You'll notice of course that the recording includes background singers, improvising harmony. One of the great things about pentatonic tunes, in fact, is that harmony can be easily improvised, as the steps between in the intervals are fairly large (as we'll learn, there are no half steps), so improvised harmony is easily accomplished.
Pentatonic tunes can be easily improvised on the piano by just sitting down and playing the black notes. Depending on what key you use as your starting pitch, using the Gb makes it major pentatonic, and using the Eb makes it the minor pentatonic.
