Revised Assignment Schedule
(page one)
This page is the actual assignment schedule for Music 171, fall 2010. It may direct you to the original assignment page, but ask you to often do the assignments in a different order.
Assignment no. 1
Due Monday, August 30

Assignment no. 2

You should also begin Practica Musica and spend a minimum ONE HOUR total on Step One. I would like to see how fast you can go through this first step. For most of you, it will be very easy and you can use it as a speed drill!
Assignment no. 3
Due Friday, September 3
Go to the original assignment page for chapter 1 and complete assignment 4-2 and 5, which direct you to PDF files that you should complete. Oh, well, actually, here's a link to them as well. Assignment 4, writing intervals and Assignment 5, Interval ID.
Before beginning these written assignments, go to the Practica Musica page and follow the instructions for STEP TWO, which will give you some more practice on interval training.
Assignment no. 4

All I need you to do this weekend is continue to work with Practica Musica. The schedule asks that you complete 2 hours by this date, 120 minutes. So please go through Steps One and Two, as laid on the Practica Musica Page. Check to make sure you are properly registered!

Practica Musica Assignment
Dur Friday, September 10

Assignment no. 6
Due Monday, September 13
You have two readings to complete. They have been photocopied and are on the table in the hall across from our classroom and the Fine Arts Office. Read these through and answer these few questions to turn in on Monday for discussion.
Assignment no. 7
Due Friday, September 17
These questions relate to all of Chapter 3 in the book. Specifically, it will useful to you if you review these chapters first, especially regarding the tetrachords, the pentatonic scale (as described in chapter 3B) and the overall discussion of ratios and commas. This assignment points you to aspects of this material that I would like you to know for the exam. Come with any questions on Friday. Here is the document for Assignment 7. Please ignore the dates. As you see, we are ahead of schedule from last year. This gives us more time for actual composition, which begins shortly.
You will need to know the following for the exam:
- Note name ID in treble, bass and alto clef.
- Interval recognition and Interval writing.
- The ratios of the fourth, fifth, whole tone, major third, major sixth and major seventh in both Pythagorean and Just intonation.
- Know which intervals are derived from the arithmetic, harmonic and geometric mean. You don't need to know the precise equations.
- Be able to write the four tetrachords beginning on any of the natural notes of the scale.
- Know the basic process for finding ratios above and below a given tone, based on the homework assignment above.
- Be able to write the harmonic series out in musical notation to the 12th partial, beginning on low C.
- Understand the general concept of the three commas and be prepared to answer fill in the blank questions concerning them. (You won't have to describe them completely on your own.)
- There will also be a take home portion of the exam, which will ask you to write a short essay on your reaction to the concepts described in the reading.
All of this will be explained in class on Friday.
