Streamlining the production of OA webcasts

openEyA is a new tool to convert classroom lectures or conference presentations to OA video.

From today's announcement:

The ICTP Science Dissemination Unit (SDU) [of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics] is pleased to announce the release of an innovative automated recording system: openEyA, which integrates different technologies under free Ubuntu Linux OS. The project's goal is to automate as much as possible the production and post-production processes of academic webcasting in order to reduce costs....

We aim to help bridging the knowledge divide in developing countries.

From the web site:

openEyA...has these main features:

  • no dedicated human intervention during recording and post-processing (no need for an operator or editor); The automated audio-video-slides synchronization is done in few minutes.
  • scalable architecture and portable (from one classroom to many);
  • no special requirements for the speaker or lecturer (no need to press buttons during the lecture or to wear a microphone, etc) ;
  • high resolution of zoomable images...
  • low total cost of hardware implementation;
  • low-bandwidth friendly features (synchronized recordings are saved as zip files)....
