Final grading summary
Calculus A: Spring 2022

I did not compute summary statistics on final exam scores or any other items (such as overall grade), because of the small size of our class. This document will show you how to compute your own overall grade, as well as what letter grade it corresponds to.

How to compute your overall grade

Note that the "Course total" percentage shown in Moodle is your correct overall /final grade. I will recap the grading breakdown here, and describe how to calculate your own grade using the numbers shown in Moodle.

Overall grade includes all the assessed items in the course. We had 13 homeworks, 10 quizzes (including the makeup), 9 classwork/labs, 3 tests, and the final exam. One lowest grades was dropped from the homework, and one from the quizzes. If you took the makeup quiz, then we effectively dropped two lowest quiz scores for you. Here is a recap of the grading distribution as stated in the syllabus:
      Homework = 10%
      Quizzes = 15%
      Classwork/ Labs = 15%
      Tests = 15% x 3 tests = 45%
      Final exam = 15%

Here is how you would calculate overall grade using your own data:

Step1: Recall, your final exam score replaces your lowest exam score if that improves your overall grade. In other words, this applies if your lowest performance is not on the final.
To implement this, I recorded your your final exam grade twice in the Moodle gradebook. Here is how: a duplicate copy of your final exam grade was added to your test scores in the form of a 4th test. I also counted your final exam grade separately, on its own. See Step 2 below for details.

Step2:   (Add top 12 homeworks)\(\times \frac{10}{300}\) + (Add top 8 quizzes) \(\times \frac{15}{48} \) + (Add all 9 labs)\(\times \frac{15}{90}\) + (Add top 3 tests, counting the final as the 4th test) \(\times \frac{45}{150}\) + (Final exam)\(\times \frac{15}{50}\)

This number is your overall grade (on 100%).

[If you want to understand this formula, for each category the numerator is the percentage weight, and denominator is total possible points on that category. Recall: there were 12 homeworks worth 25 points each (12\(\times\)25=300), 9 classwork/labs worth 10 points (9\(\times\)10=90), 8 quizzes worth 6 points each (8\(\times\)6=48), etc. So, if you made full credit on every item in the course, your overall grade would be exactly 100%.]

Letter grade boundaries

Letter grades were assigned based on the following boundaries (written in standard open/closed interval notation):

        A+ = [89, 100];   A = [84, 89);   A- = [81, 84)
        B+ = [78, 81);   B = [73, 78);   B- = [70, 73)
        C+ = [67, 70);   C = [62, 67);   C- = [59, 62)

For example, a student whose overall grade is 80.97% would make a grade of B+.   I do not round up (or down) -- for example, 80.97% doesn't become 81%, it stays 80.97%.
