Second, it shifts some products from Sony’s safe harbor into the liable category and the middle category. Products that lack plausible and likely non-infringing uses are potentially liable, according to all nine Justices.\n<<<\n\nIn http://www.corante.com/importance/archives/2005/06/28/kicking_the_sony_can_down_the_road.php Ernest Miller disagrees:\n\n<<<\nWhile Justice Ginsburg ignores the future potential for peer-to-peer, Justice Breyer revels in it. Implications of Grokster:\n\nConclusion from http://lsolum.blogspot.com/archives/2005_06_01_lsolum_archive.html#112006686207391975 blog:\n"The Grokster decision may have been a minor tactical victory for content providers, but it is a stupendous strategic loss."\n\n<<<\nGrokster and the Future of P2P\nWhat are the implications of the Grokster decision for the future of P2P filesharing? Superficially, the fact that MGM prevailed in the Supreme Court might seem like a negative for P2P, I believe that quite the opposite is true. Why?\n\n * The first question that needs to be answered when evaluating the impact of Grokster is: What is the baseline? The thought that Grokster was a victory for content providers is a result of the assumption that the Ninth Circuit's decision provided the legal baseline, and that baseline essentially immunized P2P providers from legal liability. But that assumption was never correct. The Ninth Circuit decision was just one decision in one case, and the decision itself was largely a product of the poor litigation strategy of plaintiffs--who were trying to get the Ninth Circuit to eviscerate the Sony (substantial noninfringing use) decision. The Ninth Circuit did buy the plaintiff's argument that the choices were eviscerate Sony or let P2P run amok, but decided to let P2P run amok. In my opinion, that result was unstable and never could have been the long-term status quo. The real baseline was a state of uncertainty--with the NInth Circuit Grokster decision, the Seventh Circuit's Aimster decision, and many other possibiities unresolved.\n\n * The Supreme Court's decision in Grokster makes it clear that P2P companies are subject to liability if there is direct proof of intentional inducement of copyright violations. Good legal engineering of P2P communications and business models can easily insure that such proof will be unavailable. Therefore, the intentional inducement cause of action is likely to drop out of the picture from an ex ante perspective. Of course, ex post some of the existing P2P services may have residual legal problems, but that will only shift users from some P2P services to others.\n\n * Among the P2P services that are likely to flourish in a post-Grokster legal environment is BitTorrent. Of course, shifting users to BitTorrent is no victory for content providers--it is actually a defeat. It is not in the interest of content providers to encourage users to shift to more capable P2P engines. (For more on this, see Ernest Miller's post with many links.)\n\n * Of course, there is a certain air of unreality about all of this discussion, because, as we all know, the cat is out of the bag, the barn door is open, and the genie is out of the bottle!!! No change in the legal environment can possibly contain P2P, and even if it could, the fundamental architecture of the Internet is such that massively distributed file sharing cannot be subject to effective legal control. If not "P2P," then something else, piggybacking on email, IM, or something else completely different.\n<<<\n\nOther commentary:\n\n* http://www.corante.com/importance/archives/2005/06/29/day_three_of_the_grokster_era.php\n* http://www.corante.com/importance/archives/2005/06/28/bittorrent_and_grokster_how_much_intent_does_it_take.php\n\n

When TrackBack is used, a ping will be sent to the originator of the post, so he or she will know who blogged about his or her blog entry.\n<<<\n* Pingback\n<<<\nThis is an automatic notification method used by web log owners/authors. This allows for links or continuation of discussions and alerts between sites or web logs.\n<<<\n* Permalink\n<<<\nIt is the common term referring to the permanent link of a particular blog entry or post. This enables easy referencing. It is often denoted with the symbol #. Permalinks may also be found either in the title, the date/time stamp, or a link graphic in the blog entry.\n<<<\n* RSS\n<<<\nThe acronym RSS means Rich Site Summary, or some may consider its meaning as Really Simple Syndication. It is a document type that lists updates of websites or blogs available for syndication. These RSS documents (also known as 'feeds') may be read using aggregators. RSS feeds may show headlines only or both headlines and summaries.\n<<<\n* Aggregator or RSS Reader\nStandalone app to manage large numbers of RSS feeds. May be a plugin to Firefox (eg Sage).\n* podcast\n<<<\n In a nutshell, a podcast is an audio file in MP3 format* and delivered online via RSS feed (webfeed) subscriptions. Podcast subscribers can listen to the show at his or her own leisure, which is the main attraction of this medium. As unlike Internet radio, there is no schedule to follow.\n\nYou need a podcast client/receiver to subscribe to a podcast. When you're subscribed, your client will check for new shows automatically when you ask it to. Then, you just listen to the podcasts on a computer or portable device (MP3 player, PDA or cellphone) when and where you want to.\n\nThe term podcast was derived from two words: iPod (an Apple MP3 player) and broadcast. This is attributed to the pioneers of podcasting who are iPod users. However, don't be deceived by this term, as you don't need an iPod to broadcast and/or listen to podcasts. Various non-Apple iPod tools and software may be used for podcasting and podcatching. Any computer audio software that support MP3 (Windows Media Player, QuickTime, etc.) and any portable device that supports media download and playback may be used to listen to podcasts.\n\nPodcasting is the term used to refer to the act of making and broadcasting podcasts. People who make and broadcast shows through podcasting are known as podcasters. \n<<<\n* blogroll\n<<<\n This is a collection of links to other web logs, which is found in nearly all web logs.\n\nThere are different ways and reasons blog owners create their blogrolls. The most common is to indicate the favorite links that they visit and/or read often. Another criteria may be link exchange ("I added you to my blogroll, so please add me to yours."). Some bloggers also add people and sites that they admire, but not necessarily read or visit.\n\nA blogger can create a blogroll either manually, via an automatic link manager, or both. One of the most popular link managers is Blogrolling.com. To use Blogrolling.com, all you need to do is sign up for their services, add your favorite links, and get the code to add to your blog where you want your blogroll to appear. You can easily add more, edit or delete blogs later. \n<<<\n

There are a myriad of different styles of writing in the //blogosphere// [define] and this year's Tour de France is a good subject area to sample a set of different approaches to this exciting event.\n\nOne can start with the web sites that report the basic facts, with a description of the race, perhaps a cross section for the climbs and maybe a photo gallery:\n\n* http://www.letour.fr/2005/TDF/LIVE/us/1000/index.html web site is one of these. Informative but basically boring.\n* http://www.bicycling.com/tourdefrance site is rather more interesting although saturated with adverts (thank goodness for Adblock).\n* The http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/cycling/default.stm page is potentially more interesting with Tour Stage Reports, Tour de France Extras, Photo gallery, stage guide, and a message board. Here's a graphics/bbc_cycling_71205.png of what it looked like on Tues July 12th. On this site we have a couple of different formats of personal writing to look at:\n \n## There's the tdf/robbie_mcewen_col.htm where he talking to a reporter presumably.\n## And then there's Your Tour Experiences where readers are invited to post their own experiences on the tour route. tdf/tour_experience_stage10.htm from stage 10, Grenoble to Courchevel.\n## Finally, there's a http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbfivelive/F2148575 (graphics/bbc_messagebd_stage10.png)where readers can post comments and replies.\n\nQ1: Are any of the above references really a blog? For each reference, state how you think it is like a blog and how not.\n\nNow we come to the blogging world or //blogosphere// proper.\n \nThe http://www.tdfblog.com/ blog is in classic blog format with a long central column subdivided into sections (individual posts) and headlines at the top (tdf/tdfblog_stage10.htm and updated a couple of minutes later tdf/tdfblog_stage10_later.htm. The three column layout has:\n* in the left column a list of other tdf blogs (aka //blogroll// -- we'll come to these later), other postings about the tour on different sites, links to all the recent comments made in the blog and then a list of all the top riders and references to them. \n* On the right hand column we have a long section for the sponsors (but not intrusive, unlike some other sites...) inclusive of a photo illustrating why beach volleyball has a popular following, a search fearure, link to books and media at Amazon (the author gets a cut when you buy one of these from amazon), recent posts, and an archive. \n\nFor each blog entry or posting there's a:\n# list of rider's names which are 'tagged' -- clicking on one of these gives all the entries that mention that rider -- \n# then there's a //permalink// (a permanent link to that particular posting), clicking on this will give you a page with the posting and comments and trackbacks,\n# there's a comments link where you can add your own comment relevant to the entry\n# a //trackback// link to a page of trackbacks. Intead of writing comments in other's blogs many bloggers prefer to comment in their own blog and then do a //trackback// to the originating blog which is sent a //ping//. Thus a trackback is a kind of reverse link.\n\nYou can see how comprehensive this blog is -- truely a masterpiece!\n\nOther tdf blogs:\n\n* The http://www.dailypeloton.com/displayarticle.asp?pk=8284 which can be hilarious. Here's a quote:\n<<<\nHe got onto his radio microphone and screamed, "Vai! Vai! Vai Lorenzo!," and man did Lorenzo vai (by the way, I think that's Italian for, "Lorenzo! The lycra on your buttocks, it is on fire! Ride quickly and perhaps you shall extinguish it!")\n<<<\n* http://velogal.blogspot.com/ is a real blog -- an on the spot account of covering the tour. It's blogs like these that really give you an idea of what the Tour is like from the inside. You really need to read these every day to feel the atmosphere. Here's the blog as on tdf/velogal_712.htm. \n* 'Crazy Jane' also put a female slant on the Tour with http://crazyjaneski.typepad.com/le_tour_delicieux/ . Here's a quote from her blog about stage 9:\n<<<\nThe future was looking so bright for Inigo Landaluze and Filippo Simeoni when their gap stretched to almost 10 glorious minutes before the peloton woke up and started to reel those little fish back in. Poor Señor Landaluze! He's been a pro for two years, with nary a victory to his name, and it's got to hurt to come so close, only to be swallowed up mere meters from the line by all those greedy sprinters. If only he and Simeoni hadn't horsed around in those final moments, neither wanting to lead out the other's sprint, they might have held on and saved us from another Robbie McEwen victory. Aye, me.\n<<<\n* http://www.operationgadget.com/ has yet a different take on the Tour. Here, they talk about the Tour from the perspective of technology -- there are some interesting blog links too. Here's tdf/operation_gadget_stage10.htm\n* http://tdflr.blogspot.com/ is another //blogger// hosted blog which focuses on the last rider of the Tour (take a look at http://cycloblog.com/index.php?static=glossary to understand the lingo). Again this one is authored by a woman (how come females are writing the most interesting tdf blogs?) and she has a good overview of of what the Tour de France is all about in her tdf/lanterne_rouge_stage11.htm.\n* http://spaces.msn.com/members/fatcyclist/Blog/cns!1pUmGvi9idWgOodsIbhHUOQA!324.entry -- this is totally hilarious even though it's hosted on msn! Try this TdF Personality Test:\n<<<\nQuestion 1. Who do you want to win the Tour de France?\n * Jan Ullrich: You love a comeback kid, a perpetual underdog, a likeable loser. If American, you voted Democrat. If you are a cyclist, you are more likely to be overweight than not, and use Jan as a shining beacon of what it's possible for a fat cyclist to achieve.\n * Ivan Basso, Alexandre Vinokourov: You fancy yourself a thinker, an analyst, but you're actually just a flibbertigibbet. You've looked at Basso's results from the past and think he's a good bet for the future. When Basso doesn't wind up in the top 10 after this year's tour, you will hardly notice, however, because you'll already have moved on to the next big thing.\n * Lance Armstrong: You are a pragmatist, and like to surround yourself with winners. If American, There is a 70% chance you voted Republican. If you are willing -- when confronted -- to vigorously defend Armstrong's character flaws, there is a 95% chance you are Republican.\n * Levi Leipheimer, Floyd Landis: You are a dreamer, and hold to those dreams even in the face of harsh reality. If American, you vote Libertarian.\n * Iban Mayo, Roberto Heras: You are an idealist, and tend to remember the old days as better than they actually were.\n * Someone else: You are simply obstinate.\n<<<\n* More conventional blogs:\n** http://peloton.blogs.com/\n** blogger hosted http://tdf05.blogspot.com/ and http://maillot-jaune.blogspot.com/ -- tdf/MaillotJaune_stage10.htm\n** http://www.cycloblog.com/\n\n!!! The full dope on scanning into Adobe Acrobat is http://www.earlham.edu/~markp/cms/user_guides/acrobat/scanning.php. Some quick tips:\n\n# Don't just use the default scanning mode. You will probably scan in full color at 300 dpi and produce gigantic file sizes.\n# Make sure you choose manual operation (you may have to Cancel) with the following settings:\n** Image Type : Black and White document (you want to scan in grayscale not full color)\n** Resolution : 150 dpi (300 dpi is over the top -- 150 is fine for printing)\n# Before clicking Scan draw a box around the actual text to be scanned (include page numbers and header text) -- then you'll only scan what you need rather than the whole scan bed and the page background will get lighter because the contrast will be set better.\n\n!! File Sizes\n//Small is beautiful//\nSmaller documents will load faster over the network; bloated files cause students great problems becuase their network connections are often slower and more congested.\n\n|Scan at 150dpi Acrobat| size full color | size grayscale |\n| 13 pages | 65Mb | 4.5Mb |\n| 7 pages | 33Mb | 2 Mb |\n\n----\nAug 15 2005\n

!! Describing the Resource\nThere are three crucial components to describing a resource on Moodle:\n# Name: This is displayed in the Outline and what your students click on to read. It should be concise but descriptive; for example, an Acrobat resource of a book chapter (or part thereof) might have the chapter heading as its name.\n# Summary: It's crucial to provide adequate detail here for a number of reasons:\n## to model what you expect your students to produce in their own bibliographies\n## so that you can keep track of exactly what material you have made available\nExample:\n<<<\nAlgernon Snibble, 1886, From Mafeking Street to Kipling Road: Reminiscences from the East End\nIntroduction: East End communities in the good old days.\nAdobe Acrobat 6 pages, 2.5Mb \n<<<\nThis tells the student that she will need the Acrobat reader on her machine to access this resource and it's only 6 pages so she can probably read it on screen and not bother to print it out.\n# Location: If you have asked the secretary to name the file sensibly as above it'll be easy for you to find the correct file in amongst the hundreds of others that you'll end up with.\n\n----\nAug 12 2005

Notes for faculty who have support staff (ie secretaries) do scanning for them:\n* Only the PC version of Acrobat will scan in directly from the scanner. You cannot scan straight into Acrobat using a Mac. Thus the office will need to have a scanner attached to a PC in order to create Acrobat documents for Moodle.\n* The process involves uploading the scanned Arobat file into the Files section of your Moodle course. The secretary will need to have //full teacher access// to your course in order to do this. To grant Teacher access:\n** Click Administration : Teachers\n** Potential Teachers: type in second name or username of secretary and click Search\n** Click Add new teacher\n* Do supply //original material// rather than 2nd or 3rd generation photocopy! A scan from a book will be much clearer to read than a faded copy.\n* Clear detailed instructions. Cryptic notes scribbled on Postit! labels don't cut it. Your secretaries are not mind readers. Do them the courtesy of writing out chapters, page numbers to scan and precise notes about what to include or leave out. \n* Suggest filenames to use that will help you remember their contents, eg Snibble_86_chap7.pdf. Include this in your instructions. \n* Allow plenty of time to accomplish the task but do suggest a deadline.\n\nExample:\n<<<\nCharlene, would you please scan the following from "From Mafeking Street to Kipling Road: Reminiscences from the East End" by Algernon Snibble: \n# Introduction (pp 1-5) into snibble_86_intro.pdf\n# Chapter 7 (pp 96-108) into snibble_86_chap7.pdf\n# Chapter 9 (pp 130-145) into snibble_876_chap9.pdf\n\nPlease then upload these files into the Files area of my course Cheery & Violent -- An Eastender's View, HIST 550. \nI could do with this by August 31st and certainly no later than sept 2nd. !!!Background\nCorinne Deibel and Lori Watson are both teaching sections of intro course, Principles of Chemistry. They have an application which comes with the textbook I think, called Diploma 6, which has a huge bank of questions allowing you to select questions and create multiple-choice 'exams'. To give an idea of size, there are 22 chapters each with between 50-60 questions, many of which have graphic components. Naturally Corinne and Lori wanted to make use of this resource and since the application had the facility of exporting exams to a welter of different formats including blackboard and WebCT we thought that all would be hunky dory.\n!!Problems\nBut our tests found that the question import in the quiz activity in Moodle was extremely flakey -- for instance we found that we could not import questions that had graphics, or questions with numeric comparisons in them, or more than 8 questions at a time. In short, the import process was so flakey as to be unusable.\nA common symptom would be that the first question would seem to import and then there would be an error : "Could not insert new question"\n!!Outside the box\nI came across what seemed to be a useful add-on from Humboldt Uni in http://cdc.humboldt.edu/moodle/course/view.php?id=3&topic=2%20alt=Question%20Types%20and%20Q... section called Blackboard 6 Quiz Pool importer. I figured that this would likely only run on a Moodle install with the MySQL backend (EIS's uses Postgres) and so, rather than faffing around with my Moodle install on Macarius (which is also using Postgres) I turned to my iMac, Macrina upon which I had already got MySQL running, and after manfully wrestling with it I managed to install the latest version of Moodle 1.52 on this iMac. I also installed Humboldt's Blackboard pool importer.\n!!What happened\nI created an 'exam' using the Diploma 6 application on my Dell portable that contained questions with graphics and numeric values. I exported the 'exam' which produced a ZIP file containing the questions & answers (.dat), a nest of folders with the graphics and a 'manifest' file (.xml) with a description of what items were located where..\n\nI attempted to import this data file into EIS Moodle and got the familiar error 'could not insert new question' so I copied both the .dat file & the graphics onto Macrina. I created a new quiz and, surprise, surprise, I was able to import all the questions into the question data bank. After I had loaded up the graphic images into the Files section of the course I was then able to associate the graphic images with the placeholders in the questions themselves. Now I exported the exam in Moodle format (it produces an .xml file).\n\nI opened up a new browser window and logged into EIS Moodle and went to the testing course and the quiz. I now tried the import questions function and chose the Moodle formatted file I had just saved. It imported without a hitch! \n!!Conclusions\n* Importing questions in Blackboard format does not work reliably on EIS Moodle\n* Importing questions in Blackboard format works smoothly with Moodle on Macrina\n* EIS Moodle uses Postgres database, Macrina Moodle uses MySQL database, both are Moodle v1.5\n* Exporting questions in Moodle format works fine on Macrina Moodle\n* Importing questions in Moodle format works fine on EIS Moodle\n\nThus, Moodle has to use the MySQL database backend in order to seamlessly import quiz question files in Blackboard format.\n!!Suggested workaround procedure for Chemix\n 1. Create the quiz in you Quiz app. Export the exam in Blackboard format.\n 2. Unzip the file. You get a .dat file (the data) and a manifest.xml file (showing what's where) and a nest of folders with any graphics in them that you have used.\n 3. At this point you might as well go to the folder with the graphics, select them all, right-click and choose ZIP\n 4. Now import your quiz on Moodle Macrina (you should both remember that Macrina was St Basil the Great's sister ....)\n Login to http://llya049.lly.earlham.edu/moodle as watsolo or deibeco with passwords the same as your username. You'll need to change this straight away.\n 5. There's a course there which you're techers on so go ahead and create a new quiz in this course.\n 6. Add a category if you need to -- you may want a separate category per batch of questions to keep them separate\n 7. Select import the questions and browse to the .dat file you just created.\n 8. They should all appear but will display screwey because the images have not been properly linked.\n 9. Now, I think you need to select all the questions you've just imported, and export as Moodle format\n 10. Save this .xml file on your local My Documents\n 11. Now go to http://moodle.earlham.edu and login and go to your course.\n 12. Open or create the quiz.\n 13. import the questions from the .xml file you have just saved.\n 14. in a separate tab open another view on the course and go to Administration: Files\n 15. Create a folder called graphics and upload the ZIPped file of graphics into it.\n 16. Select the file and click unzip to expand all the graphics files.\n 17. Now switch back to the quiz tab and click the Update icon for the first question with graphics. Select on each graphic placeholder in turn and click the Image icon.\n 18. Navigate to the graphics folder and find the appropraite graphic image. Double-click on it.\n 19. You will need to add a short 'alt' text before clicking OK\n 20. Repeat for each image in the question. Save when finished.\n 21. Repeat for each question containg a graphic.\n 22. When you have finished check that the quiz settings are what you want and Save then exit quiz.\n 23. Transfer to other course:\n 24. Do Administration:backup\n 25. Select quiz and deselect everything else.\n 26. Go ahead and do the backup. Rt-click on the filename and save the ZIP file to your local drive.\n 27. In the File section of the other course upload the ZIP file into the Files section.\n 28. Now restore into this course and move the quiz where you want it.\n\n----\nSept 06 2005

!!Background\nMonteze Synder has a lot of experience in conducting her courses with a strong online component. She is adept at web page creation and has been using the CHEF system hosted by MITC for the last two years. A major feature of this system for Monteze was the ability to return graded papers online to students since this was pedagogically beneficial to the student. She would markup the Word document with her comments in the context of what was written and then return this version to the student using the Chef system. For a number of reasons, she wanted to move to the Moodle system (since it was hosted locally) and naturally she desired to have a similar feature. This has not been a standard part of the Moodle Assignment activity in previous versions (up to v1.4) so when I discovered that indeed there was a 'ReviewAssignment' add-on to the Assignment module in version 1.5 I figured that our problem was solved since we were planning to migrate to this version before the beginning of the school year.\n\n!!Problems\nProblems quickly surfaced with this module; one could create an assignment using this feature but when it came to grading the student's assignment an error message appeared "nothing to display". I emailed the author of the add-on, Michael Penney, but got no reply and I didn't get any useful help from the Moodle web site (see Moodle 1.5 Issues). I suspected that this was an issue with the database code but unfortunately with the system manager on vacation I was unable to do anything more until he returned. Since then he has examined the code and found that indeed there are problems with it but he has been unable to produce a version that works with our Moodle configuration (postgres SQL database).\n!!Workaround\nThe workaround is the Wiki Activity. By setting the 'type' to 'Student' we get "Every student has their own wiki which only they and their teacher can view and edit." and since we can also allow uploading of binary files we can thereby distribute returned papers to individual students.\n!!!Procedure\n# Create the Wiki Activity. \nI would create this in the 'header' section so that it's always visible. Pull down Activity -- Wiki\n# Configure.\n** Name : Returned Assignment Papers (or similar)\n** Summary : How you want students to use this activity. "You will find all your papers marked up with comments and grade returned here. Just click on the link to download."\n** Type : Student (for 'private' wiki pages)\n** Print wiki name on aevery page : Yes (it doesn't really matter)\n** HTML mode: HMTL only (more straightforward than wiki markup format)\n** Allow binary files : Yes\n** Wiki auto linkiing options : Check Diable CamelCase linking (saves problems)\n** Student admin options : don't check any of these\n** Optional : leave blank\n** Group mode : no groups\n** Visible to students : show\n** Save\n# To use\n## Open the wiki activity and select the student's name from the Other Wikis: pulldown menu. You'll see it on the top left of the wiki screen as 'Student Wiki for Spiggy Topes'.\n## Now click the Edit tab and type in some instructions such as "Click on the attachments tab to find you latest graded assignment" into the HTMLArea box. Note that if you don't do this the uploading will fail). Click Save. You only need to do this the first time you use the wiki with that student, but you'll need to have some web content in each student's wiki.\n## Click on the Attachments tab. Make sure you're uploading into the right Wiki name (eg Returned assignment papers) \n## Browse for the file and click Upload.\n## Once the file has been uploaded successfully the student in question can access and download it. \n## There will be one wiki page created for each student, so Choose the next student's wiki and repeat the procedure.\n\nTake a look at https://moodle.earlham.edu/mod/wiki/view.php?id=6991 in the Miscellaneous:Practice course (make sure to choose a wiki -- the only one present is Student Test account) and try it out.\n\n\n----\nSept 08 2005
Got this email from Joann Quinones:\n\nquinojo@earlham.edu wrote:\n>Hello Mark!\n>\n>On Moodle, for both my Major American Writers and Introduction to Native\n>American Literature course, I would like to create a sort of form where\n>students can rate the presentations they see in class, and add some\n>comments.\n>\n>It would look something like this:\n>\n>Overall Effectiveness 1(poorest) - 5(highest)\n>Quality of Material(sources) Presented: 1 - 5\n>Preparedness: 1-5\n>Quality of Questions asked: 1-5\n>\n>Comments: (and this is where they could fill in the space.\n>\n>\n>Is it possible to do such a thing?\n>\n>Thank you!\n>\n>Joann Quinones\n\nJoann,\n\nRight now we can't do this kind of thing on Moodle. However, I have set up a survey on 'SurveyMonkey' which may do what you want and which can be easily linked to from Moodle.\n\nThe only 'gotcha' is that it's limited to 10 questions a time and since I'm using 2 questions per student, then there's a limit of 5 students per questionairre. However, we can just create 4 questionairres and direct students to the correct one. In addition, there's no foolproof way of recording who has completed the survey apart from number of responses. With 17 students in the class, you'd want 16 responses per question but there's bound to be some sluggards who can't be bothered! The results are displayed as a web page -- obviously they are not going to be directly imported into Moodle but you can easily create an 'offline' assignment in which you enter the grade for each presentation.\n\nI think that the order of names should match the order in which students present their stuff in class (if this is what they're doing). If you're happy with this way of doing it (and let's talk on the phone) you can just email me a list of students in the order they present and I can adjust the names in each survey accordingly.\n\nI have set up a testbed in the https://moodle.earlham.edu/course/view.php?id=214 course in Moodle. I have already made you a 'teacher' in this course .Go to topic 8 and see if it makes sense to you. Click on the survey link to test out the survey. Then take a look at the Grading Presentations offline assignment which is hidden from student view. This is where you'd enter the grades for each student. The only outstanding question is -- how do you get the results? Probably the best idea is for me to paste them in to a web page resource hidden from student view, as in Presentation Results in the same topic.\n\nTake a look at it and see what you think. I do think that this would work reasonably well. I'm assuming that your students will take notes during the class presnetation and then do the survey online afterwards?\n\nCheers\n\nMark\n\nScreenshots:\n\ngraphics/surveymonkey_results_rating.png\n\n[img[graphics/rating_topic_box.png]]\n\n\n\n----\nSept 07 2005
The 'big three' current issues:\n\n# ReviewAssignmentIssue\n# QuizImportProblem\n# AssessPresentations\n\n----\nSept 09 \n\nProblems with EC Moodle:\n* none of the user data seems to have been restored in courses from 2004-05. David Leeper was looking for uploaded documents from his Negotiation course (in 2004-05:Social Sciences) and there were none present. Also, In my Information Technology & Society course there are no uploaded docuemnts (and the student memebrs are missing). I then go back in as the course teacher, open the assignment and I can see a link to View 1 submitted assignments. But when I click on this it says 'nothing to display'.\n\nNow I think that this has something to do with the fact that we are running postgres because we came across exactly the same problem in the main assignment module in v1.5. Rowan (the system manager) told me that it was because some part of the SQL code was MySql specific and did not work with postgres. Anyhow, this was fixed in v1.5.1. \n<<<\n\nNo response from Penney by 07/28. Submit this as a bug on moodle.org.\n-----\n\n!! For writing assignments faculty want to be able to mark up a student's essay and then hand it back. I don't recommend the Logitech Premium [sic] USB headset 350 for use with Audacity on WinXP. There's an extremely aggravating tendency to mute the USB output or input at the WInXP level whever the levels are changed within Audacity. Maybe every USB headset does this, (the Plantronix USB headset does not, but then it does require it's own driver) but headsets that use the audio in/out seem to be more reliably controlled from Audacity. However, it's pain in the botty department to have to grovel around the back of the PC in the Lab and grope for the correct microphone in, headphone out sockets.\n

When I reset the course to 'Guest with enrollment key' I still got the same error.\nInterestly, looking at the logs the last Guest access was on Mon 29th August from 159.28.20.169 (Earlham user), other recent guest users have come from Milton NSW, Australia (210.239.16.20), Jonesville, MI (68.41.165.18) an unlocatable place (63.89.176.61), Middletown New Jersey (12.222.128.153), and Iwate (prefecture), Tohoku-chiho (region), Japan (160.29.28.11)\nFix\nRowan responded:\n<<<\nI reset it [guest user account on Moodle] to 'ldap' when I did everyone else a little while ago, and I didn't realize that Moodle treats "guest" as a real user. I need to know what to set it back to.\n<<<\nBy testing on Moodle Macrina I found that Guest was set to manual & then:\n<<<\nTha'ts exactly what I needed, and it seems to work now.\nUPDATE mdl_user SET auth = 'manual' WHERE username = 'guest';\n<<<\n\nSep 13 05\n----\nCarol Hunter [HIST : ]\nweek in outline view hidden (eye closed) -- no amount of clicking will open it.\nFix\nI was able to go into the course and reveal the week.\n----\n!!!Courses part of meta-course cannot enroll students\nWendy Selignmann [LLC : Seligmann Wed 2:30 and Seligmann Wed 7:00]\nCannot enroll students into either of these courses. Cannot unenroll Lisa Castineda either\nI went in to Adminsitration:Students but was unable to enroll or unenroll\nSept 5-9 \nFix\nThe problem was that the course was a part of the meta course before it had students enrolled and this membership seemed to prevent students from enrolling. I found a fix which invloves making a backup of the course, restoring this backup into a new course, deleteing the original and then renaming the new course back with the old name.\nSubsqeunt to this I looked at all the LLC courses and found several which were labelled 'no enrollment -- part of meta course' in the settings and I had to give the treatment to all these. \nNote\nDo not make the course Short Name too long because when duplicating the couyrse on restore a "_1" is appended to the name and if the result is too long the course will not restore.\n----\n!!!Bugginess in Assignment option settings\nJennifer Ziebarth [MATH : course unknown]\n<<<\nIt looks like Moodle isn't accepting late electronic submission of assignments, even though I've got an assignment where I've chosen "accept late assignments". \n<<<\nIt seems that there's an interaction between allow late submissions and allow resubmitting. I am using the online text assignment type (so it might be different with another assignment type), and I have found that when 'allow late submissions' is set to 'no' but allow resubmitting is set to 'yes' then students can submit their work *after* the deadline has passed, but then there's an indication in red of how late the submission was. So, I think we have:\n\n|>| !'Allow' submission setting | !Effective action |\n| !Late (p1 of assignment) | !Resubmit (p2) | |\n|No|Yes|Late submissions accepted, tardiness in red|\n|Yes|No|Late submissions not accepted apparently|\n|Yes|Yes|Late submissions should be accepted but are not|\n|No|No|Late submissions should not accepted|\n\n!!!Action\nTest this feature on Moodle Macrina.\n\n----\nMark Pearson [CS : Social Impact of Computer Technology]\nAll the assignments have a similar format -- the student merely pastes in the 'permalink' URL of the blog entry into the online assignment text input box when she/he has done the assignment writing in the blog. However, for student Kerri Jones on assignments 'Formatting with Textile2' and 'What's a blog' when she pasted the URL into the text area and saved the URL disappeared from view. The code is still there but the link does not appear in the regular view and does not appear for me the teacher after the assignment has been saved. Also, I managed to link the blog URL to the button that saves the assignment text!\n\n----\nMark Pearson [CS : Social Impact of Computer Technology]\nIn the 'Marking Block' (which is incredibly useful) none of the links actually work. One would imagine that clicking on the link to the assignment in the Marking Status box would take you there, but it doesn't....\n\n----\nMonteze Snyder [MGMT: Intro to Organizations and Human Relations] Sept 12\nAssignment 'Dynacorp case analysis' is set to allow late submissions (yes) and allow resubmitting (yes). The due date was Sept 8th and it's Sept 12th. A student was able to resubmit a corrected paper a single time but he needed to add the bibliography and resubmit again. He was unable to do this since the submission button was just not present. \nThe help text on both allow late submissions and resubmissions is clear that with both these options set students should be able to resubmit papers multiple times after grading even if the due date has passed. \nOne more nasty glitch.\nWorkaround : change assignment due date to Sept 13th. Now the submission box is present and he can upload.\n\nSept 12\n----\nMon Sept 05 2005 mod Sept 12
We really need to accomplish two upgrades this summer:\n# Moving from Moodle 1.5.3 to 1.6\n(I need to evaluate some new modules and blocks with a faculty group)\n# Switch from Postgres to MySQL database backend.\nThis will enable us to cirumvent some of the Moodle 1.5 Issues with v1.5.\n\nThere are at least two ways we can go about this:\n!!!Option 1 : Start Moodle v1.6 from scratch\nHow this would work:\n* Install and configure a fresh version of Moodle 1.6 and map to moodle.earlham.edu\n* Map the current moodle site to moodle.earlham.edu/05-06\n* MHP creates departmental categories (and courses?)\n* Faculty needing to migrate old content would have to use backup / download / restore (it would be useful if there were a comon area accessible by both moodle versions). In practice MHP would do a lot of this.\n\nAdvantages : new system, fresh database, potentially fewer hassles.\nDrawbacks : hassle copying old course into new system\n\n!!!Option 2 : Migrate all current year's courses into the new system\nHow this would work:\n* Install and configure a fresh version of Moodle 1.6 and map to moodle.earlham.edu\n* The data area would point to the same location as the current v1.5\n* Dump postgres database and reload into MySQL.\n* Retire the version 1.5 code\n\nPros : Faculty would see all the courses they created this year making them easy to reuse.\nCons : Student would still be enrolled. Need to unenroll names. Plus hide outdated courses. Wiki data may not transfer from old wiki version to new version with different format.\nFaculty have a tendency to 'reuse' an old course in situ instead of duplicating the course and modifying the copy. \n\n!!!Policy\n* Keep all courses in the same database from year to year? \n* Hide previous year's courses automatically?\n* Auto unenroll students?\n* I need a group of faculty to consult with about Moodle policies, module implementations, which directions to push etc
