Stuff on the desktop - folders (directories), shortcuts, Dustbin/Recycle bin. What is a folder/Directory?
    Quicklaunch bar, Taskbar, System Tray

  • Open "MY Documents". Toolbar:

    • Search - in the folder selected
    • Folders - open up a folder map. Folder pane has same items as on the desktop.
    • History - where have I been on the Internet today?

  • Open "MY Computer"

    • Drive letters:
      • some local drives - A:, C:, D:, E:
(Q : What drive letter corresponds to the CD drive? Is this the same on any PC?)
      • some others G:, H:, L:, P:, T:, V:.
Q : What are these? Where are they located?

    • Open Local disk C:
      • Documents and Settings - all local files stored here.
      • Program Files - Applications stored here
      • WINNT - system files

  • Search

    • Files (open drive C: first)
      *.tmp - temporary files
*.htm, *.html - web files. Notice blue I.E icon
*.doc - MS Word file (Q what is the application with this icon?)

    • What if we want to search in "Documents and Settings". How to change the "look in" field.
File specification - "*" is a wild card

    • Containing Text. eg "cache"
Rt-click on "index.dat" and choose "open containing folder"

    • Search options:
      • Date. Last 1 day, last 1 month. Can find files changed recently.
      • Type. eg Irfanview. Based on the files this search finds can you guess what it does? Try double-clicking on a file.
