Cadbury Family Collection. SC 273.

This small collection consists of a few letters regarding Cadbury genealogy, written to John W. Cadbury of Woodbury, N.J., between 1901 and 1920. Donation 2007.

Ethel Kirk Calvert Collection. 1713-1860. FMS 117.

Ethel Kirk Calvert (1860-1941) was an 1885 Earlham College graduate and a trustee of the college from 1907 to 1912. This collection consists of documents relating to her ancestry, mainly marriage certificates of members of the Hollingsworth and Wickersham families in Pennsylvania and Ohio, along with a 1713 letter of John Bates, a Virginia Quaker. Gift of Anne Parrott, 2004.

Warner-Winder-Calvert Papers. 1794-1951. FMS 78.

The Warner-Winder-Calvert Papers consist of account books, diaries, letters, photographs, and other manuscripts of six generations of Quaker families in Ross and Clark counties, Ohio. Of special interest is the account book of John Winder (1736-1819), one of the first Friends to settle in Ohio. Finding aid.

Carpenter-Wright Family Papers. 1834-1934. FMS 51.

This collection consists of correspondence, diaries, and other papers of the families of Walter T. Carpenter (1811-1910), his wife Susan (Mabie) Carpenter (1811-1908), their daughter Caroline (Carpenter) Wright, her husband Henry C. Wright, and his parents, Parvin and Ellen (Stroud) Wright, Orthodox Friends of Ohio and Indiana. It is especially valuable for material related to Earlham College before 1900. Finding aid.

Jessup-Carson-Littler Family Papers. 1831-1972. FMS 35.

This small collection consists of correspondence, legal papers, notebooks, autograph books, and genealogical material of Quaker families in Howard and Marion counties, Ind. Of special interest is a detailed notebook kept by Esther Littler while attending the Friends World Conference in Oxford, England in 1952. Finding aid.

John D. Carter Papers. 1835-1907. SC 204.

John D. Carter (1811-1900) was a minister of White Lick Monthly Meeting of Friends in Morgan County, Indiana. His papers include correspondence, business receipts, and a brief diary, 1869, kept by his wife, Ruth (Pickett) Carter (1815-1888). Gift of Rachel Ruoma, 1994.

Leland K. and Kathleen Johnson Carter Collection. 1700-1994. FMS 34.

Leland K. Carter (1895-1994) was an Indianapolis Friend. Kathleen (Johnson) Carter (1901- ) was a longtime resident of Chicago, descended from prominent Conservative Friends families. This collection includes material on Leland Carter's service in France under the American Friends Service Committee, 1917-1919, and extensive genealogical materials, especially on Quakers in Morgan and Hendricks counties, Ind.

Nathaniel Carter Collection. 1844-1971. FMS 23.

Nathaniel Carter (1779-1851) was a Quaker farmer and elder in the White Lick Friends community in Morgan County, Ind. The Carter Collection consists of a detailed diary, 1844-1849, genealogical material, and correspondence with descendants.

Carthage (Ind.) Good Templars Records. SC 184.

The Independent Order of Good Templars was a total abstinence temperance organization that included both men and women. This collection consists of the treasurer's book for the Carthage Lodge #33 for 1871-1875.

Carthage, Indiana, Temperance Group Collection. 1866-1902. FRG 42.

This collection consists of minute books for the Good Templars Lodge for 1866-1875 and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) for 1897-1901. Gift of Kenneth Goodwell, 1994.

Central Academy Collection. 1881-1932. FRG 18.

Central Academy in Plainfield, Indiana, was founded in 1881 by Fairfield, Plainfield, and White Lick quarterly meetings of Western Yearly Meeting of Friends. It closed in 1919. This collection consists of board minutes, financial records, and correspondence relating to the closing of the school and the transfer of its assets to Earlham College.

Miscellaneous genealogical data relating to descendants of Anthony Chamness (1713-1777) and wife Sarah Cole (born 1718), Quakers of Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, Orange County, North Carolina. Includes the Chamness Family Newsletter, correspondence of Mary Wright Dennis, obituaries, and a record of the Rocky River Methodist Church Cemetery in Chatham County, North Carolina. Copies of photographs and documents of the Chamness and Pidgeon families, Quakers of Henry, Randolph, and Wayne counties, Ind. and related families. Most material relates to the family of Jesse W. Pidgeon (1828-1885) of Blue River Township, Henry County; his wife, Mary (Chamness) Pidgeon (1831-1914) and her siblings; their daughter Hannah Ellen (Pidgeon) Bird (1866-1937), wife of J.T. The Charles Family Collection consists of extensive correspondence of Arthur M. Charles (1873-1947), longtime Earlham College faculty member and clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting, his wife Carrie Lane (Riggs) Charles (1872-1968), and their daughter, Mary Lane Charles.

Naomi B. Clawson Letters. 1838-1848. SC 221.

Naomi B. Clawson (1817-1872) was an Orthodox Quaker woman who lived in Wayne County, Indiana, and married John Henley (1815-1899) in 1842. This collection consists of letters written to her by relatives in Morgan County, Indiana, Clinton County, Ohio, and the Friends Mission in what is now Kansas. Alvin Teague Coate Collection. SC 80.

Alvin Teague Coate (1870-1955) was a prominent Quaker businessman of Indianapolis, Ind. and a leader in the Five Years Meeting. This collection consists of notes for two talks at Quaker gatherings.

Elijah Coate Collection. SC 188.

Elijah Coate (1812-1886) was a native of Miami County, Ohio, who died in Richmond, Ind. The collection consists of an autobiography, apparently written near the end of his life, and a sermon preached at Economy, Ind., in 1863. Coate, born a Quaker, later became a Wesleyan Methodist minister. The autobiography includes considerable material on Coate's opposition to slavery. Copy of original in Wayne County Historical Society, acquired 1998.

Amy Coates Copybook. SC 292.

The author of this copybook, Amy Coates, was apparently a Philadelphia Quaker, but she has not been definitely identified. The copybook appears to date from the 1830s and contains poetry concerning Job Scott, the dying testimony of James Nayler, and passages from the writings of R. Archer and Henry Wotton. Charles F. and Rhoda M. Coffin Collection. 1732-1916. FMS 1.

Papers of Charles F. Coffin (1823-1916), prominent Richmond banker and Friend and clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting (1857-1884); and of his wife Rhoda Moorman (Johnson) Coffin (1826-1909). Includes correspondence, autobiographies, scrapbooks, reminiscent material, and pamphlets. Finding aid.

Charles H. Coffin Collection. 1881-1930. FMS 30.

Charles H. Coffin (1851-1921) was a member of a prominent Richmond, Ind., Orthodox Quaker family. The Coffin Collection consists of genealogical material of the Coffin, Hiatt, Johnson, and related families and reminiscence material by Charles H. Coffin.

Elijah Coffin Papers. 1820-1911. FMS 49.

The Elijah Coffin Papers consist of the diary, 1848-1861, correspondence, and miscellaneous papers of Elijah Coffin (1798-1862), a Richmond, Ind., banker and the longtime clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends (Orthodox). The diary was published in 1863 as The Life of Elijah Coffin.

Gordon R. Coffin Collection. 1942-1946. FMS 105.

Gordon Reid Coffin was a Quaker conscientious objector during World War II. This collection of correspondence, photographs, and other documents concerns his experiences in Civilian Public Service during World War II, especially at the Coshocton CPS camp in Ohio. Photocopy. Levi Coffin Collection. 1825- . FMS 54.

Levi Coffin (1798-1877) was an Orthodox Quaker merchant of Guilford County, North Carolina, Newport (now Fountain City) Ind., and Cincinnati, best known for his anti-slavery work, especially aid to fugitive slaves. The collection consists of papers found in the attic of the Coffin house in Fountain City, 1825-1842, a copy of Coffin's will, papers of the family of Levi Coffin's cousin Emory Dunreith Coffin (1824-1863), whose daughter Louisa May was the ghostwriter for Levi Coffin's Reminiscences (1876), and numerous clippings.

William H. Coffin Papers. 1833-1925. FMS 20.

William Hiatt Coffin (1825-1925) was a prominent Orthodox Friend in Kansas, Indiana, and California. The collection consists of correspondence and reminiscences relating to Quaker history and Coffin genealogy, particularly the early Quaker settlers of Kansas.

James E. Connett Collection. SC 203.

Dr. James E. Connett (1862-1929) served as a Quaker missionary at Douglas, Alaska, between 1890 and 1895. This collection consists of clippings, notebooks, photographs, and diaries reflecting Connett's life as well as a register for the Friends Mission School at Douglas, 1889-1892. Copies of the Alaska Friend have been transferred to FSG. Gift of Mary Lou Coppock, 1999.

Conference of Quaker Historians and Archivists Papers. 1996-1998. FRG 28.

The biennial Conference of Quaker Historians and Archivists has met since 1976. This collection consists of papers read at the 1996 conference at Oakwood School in New York and the 1998 conference in Baltimore.

Cook Family Collection. SC 207.

This small collection consists of a deed from Jeremiah Cox to Zimri Cook for land in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, in 1816, and a few letters of his grandson, T.J. Cook, an optician in Richmond, written between 1903 and 1917. Photocopies gift of Robert Brown, 2000.

James and Lucinda (Potter) Cook were married in Wayne County, Ind. in 1850. In the 1860s and 1870s they resided in Richmond. This collection consists of twelve letters, 1869-1879, mostly written by Sarah Potter, the mother of Lucinda Potter Cook. Also included is a photograph of Thomas H. and Anna Cook, the parents of James Cook. Gift of Lucille Hatch, 1982.

Esther Cook (1857-1956) was a Quaker minister and pastor who lived and worked in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan and was a student at Earlham College 1888-18990. This collection consists of handwriting specimens ca. 1970. Transferred from New Castle Monthly Meeting.

Consists of a transcript of a deed, undoubtedly spurious, of an 1816 deed for lands in Chester, Philadelphia, and Venango counties, Pennsylvania.

Abarilla Cowgill Collection. SC 191.

Abarilla Cowgill (1840-1914) was a minister and pastor in Ohio Yearly Meeting of Friends (Gurneyite/Damascus). This collection consists of miscellaneous clippings she collected, including an obituary of her husband Eli Cowgill (1822-1894). Photocopies. Gift of Norman Carter, 1998.

Joshua Cox Family Papers. 1835-1970. SC 28.

Family record of letters to Joshua Cox (1805-1868) and wife Rosannah (Cox) (1815- ), Friends who moved from Holly Spring Meeting, Randolph County, North Carolina, to Montgomery County, Ind. in 1833. Includes letters from relatives in North Carolina, 1835-1855, a letter written from the union army by E.P. Mccluskey, and a record of the family of Orion and Rose (Custer) Wilson of Darlington, Ind.

William M. Cox Collection. 1864-1877. FMS 102.

William M. Cox (1834-1901) was a Quaker farmer who lived in Randolph County, Indiana. This collection consists of a leder that he used for household accounts, along with a few miscellaneous documents. The leder also contains a partial enlistment roster for the 134th Regiment of Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. Gift of Mary Rudy-Chapman, 2001.

Joseph Crosfield Letters. SC 23.

Joseph Crosfield (1821-1879) was an English Quaker minister who traveled extensively in the US in 1845 and 1865. These extracts from his letters home, made by Norman Penney for Harlow Lindley in 1923, describe his travels through Ohio and Indiana and attendance at Indiana and Western Yearly Meetings. Includes typescripts.

Naomi P. Curl Letters. 1848-1880. SC 25.

Naomi Painter Curl (1817-1894) was an Orthodox Friend of Pickerelltown, Logan County, Ohio. These fifty letters from friends and relatives concern personal and Quakers affairs. Included are several letters from David Hunt, Naomi's uncle and superintendent of Friends Boarding School in Richmond, Ind., and his daughter Mary D. Hunt, later Andrews. Other correspondents include Lemuel Baldwin, Sarah Cox, A.L. Curl, Charles H. Curl, Mary L. Curl. Isaac M. Gidley, Lorana Gidley, Rebecca P. Gidley, Phineas Hunt, Sarah Marmon, Amy Smith, Silas P.L. Strong, Elizabeth Ann Watkins, and M.H. Watkins. Also included is a letter from John Henley of Richmond, Ind. to Mary (Newby) Henley of Carthage, Ind., 3-16-1880, concerning family history and correspondence relating to the purchase of the collection from Timothy H. Bakken of Clarendon Hills, Illinois in 1980.
