Indexes to Journal Articles: Print and Online

Academic Search Premier
Comprehensive index to scholarly journals and general periodicals in all subject and interdisciplinary areas, including full text. Coverage prior to 1990 is sparse.

American Society of Microbiology Journals
Search all 11 journals from the American Society for Microbiology (Journal of Bacteriology, Journal of Immunology, MMBR...). Full text articles.

Annual Reviews
Comprehensive scholarly review articles for all the sciences (plus other fields). Some full text access. The other articles can be read by consulting the print volumes. They are cataloged as books: look up the call number in the library catalog.

BioOne
Full text of over 50 journals from scholarly science societies: with an emphasis on vertebrate and invertebrate biology, ecology, and the environment. Coverage from 2000 to the present.

BIOSIS (access through Web of Knowledge)
Indexes and abstracts worldwide literature on biology, 1969 to present. The is the major database of the field. It is combined with Science Citation Index (Web of Science) in Web of Knowledge. Access to full text only if Earlham subscribes to the journal online.

General Science Abstracts
Indexes periodicals on astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, math, medicine, and physics, 1983 to present. Earlham subscribes to almost all of the content, either as online full text or as print.

JSTOR
Full text of hundreds of scholarly journals in all disciplines dating back to the 1700s. Ecology is well-represented. Archival, rather than current: coverage stop 3-5 years from the present.

MEDLINE
Indexes and abstracts the biomedical literature; includes over 12 million citations from 1966 to the present. This EBSCOHost version of MEDLINE provides advanced search features, such as limiting to Earlham's subscriptions or to specific types of literature (clinical trials, review articles, etc.). Links to online full text articles in PubMed Central and online fulltext articles from journal publishers. Not all online full text is free.

PubMed
Indexes and abstracts the biomedical literature; includes over 12 million citations from 1966 to the present maintained by the National Institutes of Health. This version of MEDLINE has specialized search features but can't limit search to Earlham's subscriptions. Links to online full text articles in PubMed Central and online full text articles from journal publishers. Not all online full text is free.

PubMed Central
Full text of open access (free) life science journals; maintained by the National Institutes of Health.

Science Citation Index
Keyword and citation searching in all fields of science. Searched via Web of Knowledge either separately or in combination with other databases.

Web of Knowledge
The most comprehensive database for the sciences, covering 1000's of journals from 1981 to the present. It is set to simultaneously search Web of Science, BIOSIS, Medline, plus patent information. These databases can also be searched separately.

Web of Science (Science Citation Index)
Keyword and citation indexing of major journals across scientific disciplines, 1981 to present. Web of Science also includes Arts & Humanities Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index. It can be searched simultaneously with BIOSIS as Web of Knowledge. The is the major database of science as a whole. Links to full text only if Earlham subscribes to the journal online.

Quality zoology websites, annotations provided. Sections for general, taxonomy, endangered species, literature, government, societies, and news feeds.

The Tree of Life
An evolutionary tree of living organisms; peer-reviewed entries contributed by research scientists. Taxonomy, text, diagrams, images provided

WildFinder: mapping the world's species
Comprehensive database for mapping the geographic distribution of wildlife. A GIS system allows user to "search by place" and create species lists for ecoregions or specific locations -- or to "search by species"' to map the worldwide distribution of specific organisms.

ZooBank: World Register of Animal Names
Database of official animal nomenclature, provided by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature.

Global Amphibian Assessment (GAA)
A comprehensive database of the nearly 6,000 known amphibian species and their conservation status. Users can search by common/scientific name; taxonomy; region, country, or habitat; threatened status on the IUCN Red List; or type of threat, such as habitat loss or disease.

AlgaeBase
A database of information on algae that includes terrestrial, marine and freshwater organisms. Includes over 122,000 species and infraspecific names and nearly 6,000 images. Users can also search over 38,000 article citations and abstracts for related literature.

CNAH - The Center for North American Herpetology
Promotes the study and conservation of amphibians, turtles, reptiles, and crocodilians in the United States and Canada. Includes a list of all North American amphibians and reptiles and links to a variety of online resources. Provides access to a searchable library of over 200 herpetology articles in PDF format and the Herplit database, which contains over 50,000 citations dating from 1586 to the present.

Entomology Index of Internet Resources
A web-based directory and search engine of insect-related resources, sponsored by the Iowa State University entomology department. Entries are arranged by content type, biological taxonomy, and entomological subdiscipline, and searching can also be done by state or keyword.

FishBase
Developed at the WorldFish Center, FishBase contains practically all fish species known to science, encompassing over 30,000 species, 262,000 common names, and 40,000 references. Users may search by common or scientific name, family, country/island, ecosystem, and topic, among other choices.

Marine realms information bank
Access to free online scientific information about oceans, coasts, and coastal watersheds

Ocean World
Provides resource links for those interested in oceanography. Topics include waves, weather, currents, fisheries, and coral reefs, among others.

OceanPortal
 A high-level directory of Ocean Data and Information related web sites.

IUCN Red List of threatened species
Provides authoritative information on the conservation status, taxonomy, and distribution of animals and many plants, along with an evaluation of their risk of extinction and major threats. Searchable by common/scientific name with limits by category, regions/countries, habitat type, and threat type.

ArXiv
Searchable access to nearly half a million open access (free full text) e-prints in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology and Statistics

Global Change Master Directory
Find links to and descriptions of over 19,000 data sets and data services covering a variety of topics including agriculture, atmosphere, climate indicators, land surface, oceans and other topics in geoscience, life sciences, and environmental science.

GAP Analysis Program
Coordinated by the USGS Biological Resources Division with the goal keeping "common species common by identifying those species and plant communities that are not adequately represented in existing conservation lands" thereby providing the information needed to identify priorty areas for conservation efforts. Provides data, maps, and reports, as well as information on Gap Analysis and how individuals can conduct their own analyses.

The Endangered Species Program
Provides information on threatened and endangered species. Includes TESS (Threatened and Endangered Species database System), which can be searched by species name, taxonomic group, US state and other categories.

ARKive
A freely accessible online repository of digital images, video, and sound clips of animals, plants, and fungi from around the world.

Species 2000
Goal is to "create a validated checklist of all the world's species (plants, animals, fungi and microbes)" by combining taxonomic data from over 40 distinct databases specializing in different organizms.

ECOTOX Database
Provides data on single chemical toxicity for aquatic (freshwater and saltwater) and terrestrial plants and animals. Maintained by a division of the EPA, most of the data comes from peer-reviewed journals and is a combination of data from three epa databases: Aquire, Terratox, and Phytotox.

Kimball's Biology Pages
A comprehensive site on biology, with an index of topics and links to Biology news. Much of the information comes from the sixth edition of Kimball's Biology text book, but new information and research is added in monthly updates.

Merck & Co.
Provides online full text access to all of the Merck Manuals (the Merck Index is available only through subscription). Users may browse the table of contents and index of each manual or perfom keyword searches. Charts, graphs, and tables from the print manuals are included, as well as audio and video materials not present in the print versions.

Planet Ark
Provides free global environmental news and information, including World Environment News (a daily headline service with searchable archive and links to full text articles) and Environment News Pictures (a photograph gallery of recent environmental events).

eNature: Field Guides
Contains information on more than 5.500 individual species of animals and plants in the United States. Information provided is the same that is used to create the Audubon Field Guides. Searching is done by keyword, species group, type, color, size, habitat, and region.

Health, United States, 2007
The online version of a report on the health status of the U.S., compiled by the CDC and the National Center for Health Statistics. Presents national trends in health statistics. Users can access pdf files of the complete report, appendices, chartbook, and trend tables.
