Administrative Faculty Results

Sixty-two administrative faculty completed the survey; 36 women and 26 men. Nationwide, data was collected from 5,910 full-time academic administrators at 479 institutions. The tables below show the Earlham administrative faculty responses compared to responses from the administrative faculty at all private 4-year colleges.

A higher percentage of Earlham administrative faculty are under the age of 30 compared to administrative faculty at all private 4-year colleges and the percentage over 60 is much lower.

Overall, the marital status of Earlham's administrative faculty appears to be similar to administrative faculty from other private colleges. Some slight gender differences appear with a higher percentage of Earlham men being married compared to the women and a higher percentage of women unmarried living with a partner.

Earlham has a much smaller percentage of administrative faculty with Ph.D.'s compared to other private colleges, and a much higher percentage of Earlham men have a doctorate degree compared to Earlham women.

No Earlham administrative faculty reported working toward a Ph.D., however 21% of the 19 respondents (4) were working towards a Master's degree and 3 were working toward a Bachelor's degree.

Many of our administrative faculty are recent hires with 44.1% being appointed between 2002 and 2004 compared to only 17.2% at other private 4-year colleges. Only 8.5% of administrative faculty have been at Earlham over 23 years compared to 16.9% at other colleges who have been at their present institution for over 23 years.

Faculty activities at Earlham are remarkably similar to those of faculty at other private 4-year colleges. However, somewhat disturbing is the slightly higher percentage of faculty who felt they had been sexually harassed at Earlham. Most of these were women.

Compared to other private 4-year college administrative faculty, Earlham has a smaller percentage of faculty who experience joy in their work, feel good about the direction in which their life is headed and feel that their work adds meaning to their life. A much smaller percentage seek opportunities to grow spiritually or engage in prayer/meditation. Gender differences are apparent in most all areas. For example 68% of the Earlham men experience joy in their work yet only 47.1% of the women indicated the same.

A higher percentage of Earlham women noted these factors as sources of stress during the last two years compared to Earlham men. The greatest difference between the Earlham women and men was the source of stress from marital friction. In most cases the total percentage of faculty feeling stress from these factors was similar to the percentage of faculty from other colleges feeling the same.
