2004 season preview
Sept. 1, 2004
RICHMOND, Ind. — Earlham College men's soccer mentor Roy Messer
is the most experienced coach at the school, but his 24th squad is the exact
opposite.
"It's the youngest team that I've had in two decades," Messer
said. "I expect that consistency is going to be a challenge."
There are several keys to the season.
"How good of job to (assistant coach) Wes (Davis) and
I do and also how good of a job (the players) do at adapting to
what we want
to do," Messer said. "College soccer is just different.
The expectations are different as is the physical nature of play.
We're a zone team and almost
all of the played on man teams in high school. We don't have a
unique problem, but we do have it."
With all of the youth, Messer expects to teach defense early in
the season.
"In a year, like this you would be prudent to start with
defending," Messer
said. "We'll work hard on that early on, so that is a strength
of the team long term."
Blake Vojtasek (Logansport, IN/Logansport), Adam Noland (New Albany,
IN/St. Francis) and Troy Burks (Mableton, GA/Westminister) are
the only seniors on the squad. Some of the other returning
players
are Jon
O'Neil (West Lafayette, IN/West Lafayette),
Mark
Brimmer (Indianapolis, IN/Lutheran),
Kevin Hunter (Hillsboro, NC/C.E. Jordan),
Leland Gyr (Benzonia, MI/Leelanau), Atiq Zamani (Bloomington, IN/North)
and Galen Schumann (Lafayette, IN/Harrison).
More about men's soccer
The most successful program in Earlham athletic history, the men's
soccer team has a 399-286-65 record for a .575 winning percentage
since gaining varsity status in 1949.
The Quakers have excellent facilities
for soccer and play their home matches at Charlie Matlack Field.
The on-campus field was dedicated in 1998 and includes an adjacent
practice area. Indoor training takes place in the $13-million
Athletics and Wellness Center.
In a move to affiliate itself with other colleges with like
academic philosophies, Earlham joined the North Coast Athletic
Conference in 1989. The conference has a strong tradition in
men's soccer with at least two teams advancing to the NCAA Division
III tournament in each of the past 12 seasons. Defending NCAC
Tournament champion Ohio Wesleyan captured the 1998 national
crown.
Head coach Roy Messer has guided the Quaker program for the
past 23 years, compiling a 211-174-44 record. The Paramus, New
Jersey, native has been honored as the NCAC Coach of the Year
in 1995 and 1997.
Wes Davis enters in his third season in assisting the Quaker
soccer program. Davis is a graduate of Central College (IA) where
he received a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science.
Tradition, dedication and experience have all contributed to
Earlham's success, but fan support is a big factor too. Messer
sees the knowledgeable and vocal fans as an important part of
the team.
"When we go on the road, we sometimes have more fans at
the game than the home team," Messer said. "People
turn out here because they like soccer and because they have
friends on the team. Those friendships outside the team are part
of the Earlham way."
While participants in the Quaker men's soccer program take their
athletic commitment seriously, they are counseled to give academics
top priority. Orion Creamer (Lawrence, KS/Lawrence), an art major
with a 3.37 grade-point average; Jamie Pettengill (Indianapolis,
IN/North Central), a biology major with a 3.36 grade-point average;
Bert Lyons (Memphis, TN/Christian Brothers), an English major
with a 3.28 grade-point average; and Duff Davis (Naperville,
IN/Central), a computer science major with a 3.04 grade-point
average; received the 1999 Wendell M. Stanley Award that recognizes
exceptional senior male student-athletes. Creamer, a goalkeeper,
was the NCAC's 1998 Defensive Player of Year and ranks 20th among
Division III goalkeepers in goals-against average. From 1995-98
he allowed 46 goals in 5,073 minutes for a .82 goals-against
average. Pettengill, a midfielder, was named to the NSCAA Division
III All-America third team.
Orion Creamer received NCAC Scholar-Athlete honors as Earlham's
outstanding senior male student-athlete in 1999. Nathan Boyce
received the same award in 1995 and earned more than $30,000
to attend graduate school as a Beinecke Scholarship recipient.
He immediately began Ph.D. studies at Stanford University.
Belonging to the NCAA Division III, Earlham offers academic
scholarships to qualifying students as well as need-based financial
aid. For more information, contact head men's soccer coach Roy
Messer at 765/983-1485, or by E-Mail at messero@earlham.edu.
