Offense explodes as Quakers defeat Hanover
September 17, 2005
RICHMOND, Ind. — An offensive explosion by the Earlham
College men’s soccer team opened the door for the Quakers 3-0
victory over Hanover College on Matlack Field.
Earlham broke the tie when Hanover’s goalkeeper
got out of position and sophomore Chris Sloan (Bethesda, MD/Sidwell
Friends) took advantage of the open net
for the Quakers’ first goal at 78:17 in the second half. “The
odd thing is that we’ve played better games, but today we won,” Earlham
coach Roy Messer said. “I’ll take it. We’re starting
to play better and get in the habit of success.”
Success happened quickly as first-year
Victor Anciano (San
Antonio-Altos, Venezuela/Armand Hammer) made it 2-0 with a goal
at 79:54 with an assist from senior Atiq Zamani (Bloomington,
IN/North).
Anciano added the final score of the contest at 89:39
on an assist from Earlham junior goalie Jon O’Neil (West
Lafayette, IN/West Lafayette). O’Neil kicked
the ball over the midfield stripe and Anciano allowed the ball to
bounce before he played it and found the net. Earlham out shot Hanover
as O’Neil had two saves.
The Quakers (1-5) visit Taylor University on
Wednesday. The non-conference contest starts at 4 p.m. Box
