The Writing Center aims to help all students become better writers through a broad range of habits that experienced writers rely on: reading, freewriting, revision, feedback, and discussion about writing practices. The center provides a friendly, comfortable space where student writers of all levels and faculty of any discipline can discover techniques for writing and teaching writing more clearly and efficiently. We encourage students to make conscious choices about writing and approach writing as a reflective process.
For Students
Whether you need to write a response paper for IP or a senior thesis in economics, the Writing Center can help get you through the rough spots. Stuck at any stage of the writing process? Peer writing consultants are trained to help you rediscover your own path, from brainstorming and organizing the structure of your paper through rough drafts to final edits. They work with you to improve your writing, not just your paper. As experienced readers and writers of academic essays, consultants offer a fresh perspective you can trust.
For Faculty
In addition to making more online resources available for those teaching writing-intensive classes, the Writing Center offers occasional workshops or discussion forums on topics related to best practices in teaching writing. The Writing Center also provides classroom presentations on a range of writing-related topics on request. Whatever your discipline, the Writing Center collects and disseminates info that encourages experimenting with diverse writing styles and formats. The center also seeks to foster dialogue among the disciplines about what we mean by good writing, models, feedback, and evaluation.
For Everyone
The Writing Center is more than a physical space you visit when you want to work on a problematic paper. For students and faculty, we'll gradually be offering more online information about the writing process as well as links to writerly resources. With these tools at your fingertips, we hope that you begin to find your own writing center within to guide you through any writing project.
