Professional Staff
The people that make up the staff of the Wilderness Program come from a variety of backgrounds and experience-bases. All of us share a passion for teaching and learning and a love of the outdoors and wild places.
Jay Roberts, Director
B.A. Anthropology and Environmental Studies, Lawrence University
M.Ed. University of Virginia
Jay has been director of the Wilderness Program since 2000. In previous positions Jay has directed a ropes course, taught rock climbing, facilitated at-risk youth, and managed coffee stores. His professional interests include brain-based learning, classroom applications of experiential education, and the psychology of performance. When he’s not behind his desk, Jay loves to get out and climb anything he can find including rock and ice.
Tom Ferrell, Associate Director
B.S. Outdoor Education, Indiana University
Tom started in 2002 as the Associate Director of the Wilderness Program. After graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation, Tom searched hard for the perfect outdoor job. Tom has gained experience working for the Forest Service in Idaho, Pacific Crest Outward Bound School in California, and guiding dog sled tours in Alaska. Tom thinks he has finally found what he is looking for, working for Earlham, in his hometown of Richmond. In his spare time, Tom likes to climb. When he is not climbing, he is thinking about climbing.
