New Buildings

Preamble and Statement of Commitment
The most important energy conservation and production capacities of buildings are put in place during the initial construction of those buildings. In addition, related improvements can be made during major building renovations. Earlham will continue to pursue cost-effective energy conservation and production capabilities as new construction and renovation occurs on the campus.

What Earlham has done and is doing on planning new and renovated facilities
While Earlham has chosen not to submit buildings for LEED certification, Earlham does consider many of the resource-saving and sustainability features embodied within the LEED process and guidelines. Examples of what Earlham has required since 1990 (or earlier) in new construction and renovation projects are: improved windows with low-e panes and thermal breaks; increased insulation in walls and ceilings; incorporation of energy-efficient heating and cooling systems; elimination of incandescent and other inefficient forms of lighting.
