Laboratory Hazard Identification and Risk Minimization

nfpa

The main goals of laboratory safety is to identify hazards so that risk can be minimized.

Common Hazards in a Chemistry or Biology laboratory or stockroom include:

  • Flammable liquids and solids
  • Toxic and Carcinogenic Compounds
  • Oxidizers
  • Reactive Materials
  • Peroxide formations
  • Gas Cylinders
  • Electrical Hazards
  • Physical Hazards

In the following pages, all of these types of hazards will be discussed, as well as ways to minmize the risks associated with them.

For chemicals, each departmental area will have a MSDS catalog with information on chemicals in that department. MSDS information can also be found by searching on the internet. MSDS sheets provide valuable information that will assist you in making decisions on how to best minmize your risk by indicating the hazards of each substance.
